About Classes

Beginner’s Always Welcome
The study of aikido increases flexibility, endurance, and balance. Most students find that it reduces stress and increases the ability to focus. Aikido can be a very effective form of self-defense. However, that is not the goal of aikido; rather we strive for agatsu, the control of ourselves. We train cooperatively to help beginners learn basic shapes before progressing to an exploration of martial principles. Whether you are looking for exercise that works your brain, a new approach to refining yourself for other pursuits, or you just like the philosophy and want to learn more, you are welcome to join any of our adult classes. Wear some comfortable exercise clothes and show up a little early to say hello to Sensei.

General Adult Classes
This is the regular adult class. Anyone can attend who has already gotten the basics in a beginner course or is transferring from another dojo. Both open hand and weapons are used in class. Tuesday’s focus is Kihon Waza. Thursday and Saturday are for Aikido concepts and principles.

Weapons Class
Focus on weapons: bokken, jo, and knife. You may bring your own wooden weapons or use the ones provided at the dojo. This class is for anyone who’s gotten the basics of the beginner’s course or transferring from another dojo.

Youth Class
As is our tradition, we will adjust each class to the students present, taking into account age, skill, and experience. All are welcome. New students will start with the basic techniques of the entry-level (6th kyu) and will advance as far as their efforts take them.

Special Monthly Friday Class
Usually the second Friday of each month everyone in the dojo from beginners to senior students are invited to attend class and then afterward go out to dinner together. It’s a great opportunity to bond and get to know others. Contact the dojo to find out when the next special Friday class will be.
